I Think I May Have Gum Disease, What Are The Signs?
  • Bleeding gums that can be red, swollen or tender.
  • Gums that pull away from the teeth.
  • Teeth that appear to be moving or feel loose.
  • Visible Tartar.
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that is persistent.
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
What Is Gum Disease And What Causes It?

Plaque is a sticky film that contains bacteria and sticks to teeth and gums.  If the plaque is not brushed away daily, the bacteria release toxins that irritate the gums causing them to bleed and becoming red, swollen and tender.  This is called gingivitis.  This can lead to a more serious infection that can destroy the supporting surrounding bone and in turn could eventually lead to loose teeth.  This is known as periodontitis. Smoking can also make gum disease worse, as well as reducing the response to treatments.  Smoking reduces bleeding from the gums and therefore masks the signs of disease.

Should I Visit The Hygienist And How Often?

With over 90% of the population showing signs of gingivitis we strongly recommend you to see the hygienist.  At Mayhew Dental we strongly believe in prevention, so our hygienists will work closely with you to teach you how to clean your teeth effectively in order to try and prevent gum disease.  For those suffering from gum disease both the dentist and hygienist will work closely together to treat the disease.

Each patient will be assessed individually to establish how often it is advisable to see the hygienist to maintain healthy gums.
