Why Do I Need Root Canal Treatment?
You May Need Root Canal Treatment If You Have:
- Pain when eating or drinking hot, food or drink.
- Throbbing or pain when biting.
- Spontaneous tooth ache or waking up at night with tooth ache.
- A deep cavity or injury to the tooth that causes an infection in the bone.
- A colour change or darker looking tooth.
- A swelling in the gum near a tooth, which may discharge pus.
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth when the tooth’s nerve chamber becomes infected by decay or damaged by injury. This chamber is called the pulp chamber and contains the nerves and blood vessels that provide nutrients to the tooth. It will begin to die if infected by bacteria. The infected / damaged pulp must be removed. This can be done one of two ways;
- Removal of the whole tooth which incorporates the pulp. (We try to avoid this unless absolutely necessary, as it is important to try and keep as many of your own teeth as possible).
- Root canal treatment, which involves removing the infected pulp and replacing it with a special filler that helps protect the tooth.

What Happens If It Does Not Work?
In most cases root canal treatment is successful, however occasionally the tooth may not recover from the initial infection or get a secondary infection. In some cases the root canal treatment can be redone or the tooth may need to be removed.
Can’t I Just Take Antibiotics To Solve The Problem?
Although antibiotics can help with the gum swelling they are not effective in treating root canal infections because antibiotics reach the site of infection through your blood and the infection is within the nerve chamber and not accessible via this route. Additionally repeated courses of antibiotics may also lead to bacteria adapting and finding ways to survive the medication’s effect, i.e. they become resistant to antibiotics, which means that they will no longer work (Antibiotic Awareness Campaign).
