Why Do I Need To Replace Missing Teeth?
- To help with eating and speech.
- You do not wish to have a gap that can look unsightly. Give you back your smile.
- To restore the appearance of fuller lips and maintain the shape of your face.
- Distribute the forces associated with chewing and biting evenly among all your teeth.
- Prevent other teeth moving into the space.
How Can Teeth Be Replaced?
There are three different ways to replace missing teeth.
Dentures
Dentures are removable false teeth made of acrylic (plastic) or metal. They fit snugly over the gums to replace missing teeth and gums. They can replace from as few as one tooth (partial dentures) to all your missing teeth (Complete Dentures).
Bridges
Dental Bridges are natural looking tooth replacements. They are cemented to the teeth next to the gap and do not come out. There are two main types of bridges.
Adhesive; this technique can be used if the tooth that will be holding the bridge is healthy and has only small fillings. A metal wing is used to hold the bridge in place, therefore resulting in minimal preparation of the adjacent tooth.
Conventional; this technique can be used for larger gaps and also when the adjacent teeth have large fillings. The adjacent teeth will need to be prepared
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a screw placed into the jaw bone that replaces the missing root of the tooth. At Mayhew Dental we use Straumann titanium implants that are biocompatible with your body. I Need Teeth Removed, I Don’t Want Gaps, Can They Be Replaced Immediately?
Immediate dentures can be made and usually fitted immediately after teeth have been removed. The bone and gums will however shrink over time especially during the first three months after teeth have been removed. They may need relining, adjusting or replacing. This is also why we recommend you wait before having bridges and implants, however there are occasions when these two options may be considered immediately after teeth removal.
