Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Gone are the days when it was accepted that most people would lose their teeth during middle age, or even earlier. Teeth really can be made to last for a lifetime if they are given proper care.
Oral hygiene is an essential part of your dental care and preservation of your teeth. By following our brushing and dietary advice you will prolong the lifespan of your teeth and ensure that your mouth stays as healthy as possible giving you a confident smile. Patients can minimize their visits to the dentist with preventive dentistry.
The Two Main Dental Diseases
Dental Decay
Gum Disease
How Often Should I See The Dentist?
We advise all patients to have regular oral health examination with the dentist. We will assess you individually to advise you how often you should visit.
We also have a therapist and a hygienist. They will actively work with you to ensure that not only your teeth stay healthy but also your gums. Without healthy gums, and bone, the teeth have no support and in extreme cases tooth loss can occur. Find out more about gum disease and seeing the hygienist by clicking here.
We will routinely carry out an oral cancer screen at every check up and therefore seeing the dentist routinely can help detect early sign of many oral diseases. It is important to be aware of any changes within your mouth and discuss them with the dentist if you have any concerns. Both smoking and alcohol increase the risk of oral cancer. If you would like to stop smoking then please discuss this with your dentist for further advice.
Our end goal with all nervous patients is to build up their confidence and help them accept treatment comfortably and without fear. We believe that by taking our time and working together with each patient we can help undo the bad experiences patients have had in the past that have resulted in them becoming nervous. Come and discuss your concerns and any fears you have with our team.
Preventing dental conditions requires a lifelong commitment that usually begins with the appearance of the first tooth. Children should see a dentist shortly after this to begin developing proper dental hygiene habits. Parents play an important role in helping their children develop and maintain these habits throughout childhood and early adulthood.
We offer specially designed children sessions which are out of school time so they do not need to miss school. These sessions offer a child friendly environment, with oral health displays and activity sheets to help educate children. We find that children seeing so many other happy children in the waiting room, helps to reassure those who are nervous. We take special care to make the experience an enjoyable one.
This is a painless procedure involving painting a very strong plastic layer onto the chewing surface of the back teeth, making them tough and resistant to decay and is very effective in young children just after the teeth erupt.
Sports guards should be worn by both children or adults, for contact and non-contact sports to protect your smile.
A properly used and fitted mouth guard protects by:
- Absorbing shock and forces caused by falls, balls, and people
- Protects against broken teeth and avulsed teeth
- Protects the jaw and soft tissue of the tongue and cheek
- Is thought to reduce the severity of a concussion
We can make a sports guard specially tailored to your mouth, making it well fitting and as a result offering more protection then general ones.
If you are concerned that your child may need braces then book an appointment to have them assessed. As part of our routine oral examination we assess teeth position, discuss any concerns you have and refer them to an orthodontist if necessary.
Mayhew Dental believe that exposing children to the importance of oral health from an early age, we can build on preventing dental disease in the future. We have visited several local schools and nurseries to discuss oral hygiene, diet advice and dental disease in a fun and interactive manner. We have always been invited back. If you know a school or nursery who could benefit from a visit, please contact us and let us know.
